Video Games, Jack Thompson, and the feelings inbetween.
If anyone has been following anything related to video game politics or video game satire, then you most assuredly have come across a man named Jack Thompson. For those of you who don't, let me briefly explain.
Jack Thompson is one of those men who thinks video games are murder simulators, and that people who play video games are influenced enough to go out and reinact what they play. And I'm not talking about LARPing. Since he is a lawyer, he's made it his personal quest to bring to light the maybe two or three instances where a murder has taken place in which the killer was also a video game addict. He's completely insane and very very very loud about his opinions.
So the story goes that he offers $10,000 to a charity if someone will produce a video game based on his idea. Of course his proposal goes a little on the lines of, "A boy is beaten to death with a bat by a 14 year old gamer, and his father goes on a murder spree. He kills CEO's of video game companys and their family and children. He kills lawyers, video arcades etc." It fucking doesn't make sense.
Of course someone did sort of make a game like that, I believe it was a patch for Grand Theft Auto game, and no Jack wouldn't write the check out to the charity. He said he was kidding.
So Penny Arcade, writes out the $10,000 check, in his name. If you don't know Penny Arcade, they do webcomics/reviews on video games, as well as run a very impressive charity that is run and supported by GAMERS, called Child's Play Charity. They raised over half a million in donations, toys, games, video games.....you name it for hospitals and different organizations.
Now Jack Thompson keeps getting madder and madder. He's threatened them with the police, send them faxes about how he is going to send the cops, then calls the FBI on them, and now I hear its the Justice League that he's trying to send on them.
Basically what takes me out of my hole to post something is this. Video games are dorky. Some people play them a lot, some people play them from time to time. But when one man says that video games teach us to murder, to kill..... I get really pissed off. If games are teaching me to murder, then they are also fucking teaching me to cast level 4 fire on hordes of my enemies, teleport, collect fun hats, and level up.
Seriously, you want to look at a scary group of people? It's definately not some kids playing World of Warcraft with their night elves and gnomes, its the fucking NRA.
